Q:As a pottery teacher, most of my student's problems with collaring involve the piece getting ripples as you push it together. If you collar a little at a time and do a small pull in between, you should be able to keep that from happening. If you had the same problem, I hope this info helps. ~Erin

You’ll see very soon that I did manage to overcome my collaring block. It’s basically like you said, but when I couldn’t go thinner I simply compressed the walls. I also read from a different source that I should be going at about 1/4 speed or lower while collaring, and low and behold, working incredibly slow, I had almost no problems with ripples. Almost.
